"Anchors" can mean so many different things to engineers, contractors, sailors, dentists and orthodontists. Ankylosed teeth are significant anchors to orthodontic practice. Dental ankylosis can occur in both the primary and permanent dentition. These teeth have profound effects on dental eruption and alveolar development in the growing child. In adults, ankylosis presents serious challenges to orthodontic tooth movement and prosthetic rehabilitation of the dentition. This lecture uses numerous clinical examples from private practice along with a review of the literature to explore the demographics, etiologies and treatment options for managing ankylosed teeth. Attendees will be presented with unique solutions for the treatment of both children and adults with ankylosed teeth.
Learning Objectives:
Better understand the prevalence/incidence, causes and diagnosis of dental ankylosis.
Better appreciate the impact ankylosed teeth have on the developing dentition and the interdisciplinary treatment of permanent teeth.
Have greater awareness of unique treatment options for orthodontic management of ankylosed teeth in both children and adults.
