The destructive effects of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) on dental health are well known and can be managed. Coincidental with the dental treatment of patients with SUD are the additional challenges of potential adverse drug interactions and the coordination of care with addiction specialists. This program highlights drugs used in the treatment of SUD, the relationship of SUD to other mental health disorders, and the recognition and management of acute opioid intoxication.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize adverse oral conditions associated with Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
Evaluate dental interventions designed to mitigate adverse oral conditions associated with Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
Identify drugs used in the treatment of patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and their potential impact on dental treatment.
Utilize American Heart Association protocols for the detection and management of opioid overdose-associated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Summarize current American Heart Association guidance on infective endocarditis associated with injection drug abuse.
