One of the most challenging aspects of the Opioid Epidemic is the identification of dental patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). This program highlights simple, readily available screening tools for SUD that can be efficiently integrated into the dental practice. Additionally, the recognition of acute intoxication with controlled substances will be emphasized. Documentation required for ordering and storing controlled substances will be covered, including legally acceptable methods of drug disposal.
Learning Objectives:
Describe scenarios involving dental patients in which diversion and abuse of controlled substances may occur.
Recognize common sources of prescription medications diverted to illicit channels.
Identify and utilize various online tools (e.g., questionnaires) for screening dental patients for Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
Implement office protocols that can be used to prevent diversion and abuse of controlled substances.
