Dentists are sometimes reluctant to treat sleep related breathing disorders because they’ve heard that oral devices cause temporomandibular disorders, move teeth, induce pain, and ruin bites. This talk will provide the dentists assurance that patients have many concerns and prior health events that alter their susceptibility to short and long-term adaptive responses. These need not be barriers to helping patients breathe well during sleep. There is science behind this confidence and practical ways to reduce risk.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the fact that ‘nothing’s free’ when treating breathing problems.
Understand the literature related to the risk of complications.
Use key techniques to maximize treatment effectiveness by minimizing side effects.
